MAURITANIA RAILWAY - the backbone of the Sahara

Added on by Miguel de Olaso.

The Mauritania Railway, opened in 1963, consists of a single, 704-kilometer railway line linking the iron mining center of Zouerat with the port of Nouadhibou.

Trains on the railway are up to 2.5 kilometers in length, making them among the longest and heaviest in the world. Passenger cars are sometimes attached, but more often passengers simply ride atop the ore hopper cars.
